The common refrain: “it’s my all-time favorite”. @electronicjunkie and @siliconfarmer both highly recommended:

Hdl Chip Design: A Practical Guide for Designing, Synthesizing & Simulating Asics & Fpgas Using Vhdl or Verilog

Though it’s out of print, you can still purchase copies through Amazon sellers - used. I don’t have a book cover image for the Hdl Chip Design book. This book is very expensive @ an average used price of about $135. Some were going for over $200. I hope it’s really good!

FPGA guru @jeriellsworth Jeri Ellsworth recommended:

$52.25 @ Amazon

@SiliconFarmer recommended this self-study guide:

$61.08 @ Amazon

I also thought this book looked quite good and it had many good reviews written for it on Amazon:

$76.90 @ Amazon

I expect this to begin a very long journey into a self-study of FPGAs, so I decided to buy all four of these books. They are definitely an investment (I hope). Not sure how else to teach myself this topic.

Back to the original question I put to the @esawdust followers...I would have loved to have found a full-on Computer Architecture book that lays the foundations for processors and microcode to have labs based on FPGAs. These books above are close but not quite what I was hoping to find. Imagine these books below with an FPGA lab at the end of every section and you’ll see what I was hoping to find:

In the meantime, I’m sure there’ll be PLENTY to study and learn and after that, maybe I’ll see why the book I’m looking for doesn’t exist.
